Babesti village belongs to the district of Halmeu. It was first attested in documents in 1261, when the settlement and its wide territory that comprised the entire Oas area until Visk (Viskove, Ukraine) from the old Maramures, used to belong to the Kata family. The owners built a fortress on the hill nearby the village, and its ruins are still visible today. Subsequently, the village Tamaseni rose at the bottom of the Tamaseni fortress. Babesti village has lost its importance in time becoming today a small village with 348 inhabitants, when other localities developed in the area, of which the most important was Halmeu.
The Roman-Catholic Chapel was consecrated in 1965 and is dedicated to the honor of Saint Ann.
