Giula

Giula village has 1355 inhabitants and it’s situated 20 km south-east from the district centre of Vinogradovo, nearby the border with Romania.
The village was first mentioned in 1396. The locality was probably founded in the second half of the 14th century, because Giula isn’t mentioned in a drawing of boundaries of the neighboring villages, Klinove and Ciornotisiv, in 1337.
In the first half of the 15th century, the village is mentioned among the estates administrated by the domain with the centre in Nyalab fortress and owned by the Perenyi family. The domain stays in the property of the family for the next centuries.
The village was famous for the good quality of the wine since the 18th century. Viticulture was the main occupation of the inhabitants, and not only. Inhabitants from the area used to come and buy land from Giula locality, and they would then cultivate it with vine. An inscription from 1720 mentions that there were 73 persons who cultivated vine in Giula among who 27 are nobles, except the inhabitants.
Traces of an aristocratic curia are still visible in the locality. It was probably built in the first half of the 19th century. Halmagyi family, the owners of the manor, had a domain cultivated with vine and a plantation of fruit trees in the area. The funeral stones of the family members are preserved nearby the ruins. The small curia was built according to a simple, rectangular plan, probably fit with a basement, too. Its outside aspect or the division can’t be mentioned because after it was used as deposit in the communist period, the curia was demolished in 2007, and the material of the building, including the foundation, was taken by the inhabitants.
